The Forecourt of Avignon Centre Station: From Car Park to Mobility Garden The Forecourt of Avignon Centre Station: From Car Park to Mobility Garden

Balancing various forms of mobility, ensuring smooth travel flows, and creating a garden to calm and beautify the urban space while re-establishing a direct connection with the city were the key objectives for redeveloping the forecourt of Avignon Centre Station.

To anticipate evolving needs and address the challenges of climate change, we aimed to design innovative solutions that combine comfort, sustainability, and services tailored to urban uses.

An in-depth historical study, conducted by our landscape architects and a heritage architect, highlighted the local landscape heritage and ensured the project’s seamless integration with its surroundings, at the foot of the city walls. Simultaneously, the station underwent a complete renovation.

The planting strategy focused on preserving the existing plane trees and introducing a diverse range of endemic vegetation to strengthen local biodiversity. This landscape approach enhances orientation, clarity, and pedestrian flow while creating attractive spaces enriched with seasonal blooms and a variety of colours.

At the crossroads of intermodality and greening, this project offers a qualitative extension of the station and its services onto the forecourt. It exemplifies the shared ambition of SNCF Gares & Connexions and AREP to ensure good train accessibility, strengthen connections with other sustainable modes of transport, and adapt station environments to ecological, climatic, and practical challenges, fostering openness to cities and regions.
