Public Spaces

AREP has designed a new generation of shade structures for the City of Paris.

With AREP, the City of Paris is inventing practical solutions to adapt public spaces to high temperatures and this summer rolled out RIVA, a new generation of urban shade structures, to make the city more breathable and pleasant.

The ‘Paris s’adapte’ programme plans to gradually roll out this new street furniture, giving priority to areas frequented by the most exposed and vulnerable members of the public.

This seasonal furniture, designed by our designers, is removable. It is modular, adapts to all types of spaces, is easy to store and requires light and discreet foundations. Respectful of Parisian identity, it is in keeping with the capital’s urban heritage, while infusing it with a light and contemporary summer aesthetic.

The range is available in five widths and can be adjusted in length to cover between 7 m² and 100 m² depending on the configuration chosen. The supporting structure and frame are made from over 80% recycled steel, and the roof is composed of PEFC-certified Douglas fir slats. The shapes optimise the shade cast at all times of the day, while allowing natural air circulation. Beyond their climatic performance, these shade structures have been designed for everyday use, ease of installation and harmonious integration into the urban landscape.
